Boston (10/11/22) – The Home for Little Wanderers announced today that regional furniture store, Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture, along with their partner, Tempur-Sealy International, is donating 25 mattresses, box springs and bed frames to The Home for Little Wanderers. The beds will go to The Home’s programs that need them most, providing a warm bed, comfort and a soft landing for youth who have experienced the harsh realities of homelessness. This in-kind donation is the most recent in a legacy of giving that has spanned decades.
“The late Bernie Rubin, a true humanitarian, and his family-run company, have been longtime advocates of the children and families served by The Home,” said Lesli Suggs, President and CEO of The Home, “Whether providing furniture donations, taking youth in our group homes to a fun-filled day at Fenway Park with Bernie’s Baseball Buddies, extending the reach (and donations!) of our Big Wishes holiday campaign by using their stores as collection sites or donating their iconic vehicle for past “Stuff-a-Truck” events, Bernie & Phyl’s has been there for our kids. Thank you, Bernie & Phyl’s, for always keeping the children we serve front of mind, and for your commitment to creating happy memories, brighter days and better futures.”
The Home for Little Wanderers’ 25+ community-based and residential programs serve thousands of at-risk youth from birth to age 26. Many of these children have experienced abuse, neglect, trauma or a disrupted family life. As the oldest child welfare agency in America, The Home provides them with safe surroundings, permanent loving relationships and a secure path toward a better, brighter future.
Often children who have experienced abuse and neglect or have severe behavioral problems require out-of-home placement. The Home’s six residential programs provide supportive living environments and diverse levels of service and support. The Home also supports youth who have spent most of their life in state care in their transition to adulthood. When these young adults “age out” of the system, they can fall victim to homelessness, unemployment, incarceration, early pregnancy, substance abuse and other hardships. The Home for Little Wanderers helps prevent those obstacles by offering programs and services that help older children head toward the future as confident, self-sufficient adults. The 25 beds donated by Bernie and Phyl’s will support these residential programs, giving vulnerable children and young adults a safe, stable place to sleep, recover, and flourish.
Bernie and Phyl’s will also serve as a drop off location for gift card donations for The Home’s Big Wishes Gift Drive. Collections will be taken until December 12.
