At The Home’s Wediko School, a residential program serving youth with emotional and behavioral challenges, healing and growth don’t just happen in classrooms or counseling sessions. Sometimes, they happen 30 feet below the ocean’s surface.
Each year, a group of Wediko students earns their open water scuba certification and embarks on an extraordinary journey to the Isles of Shoals. There, they dive alongside wild grey seals in their natural habitat. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that most people only see on television. For these students, it’s real, powerful and unforgettable.

What makes this story stand out is not just the stunning marine life or the rare adventure. It’s the young people behind the masks. Many of them have faced significant trauma, instability and emotional hurdles. In the water, they are not defined by their diagnoses. They are explorers who display bravery and resilience.
Students follow rigorous safety protocols as they wait for the seals, who often can’t resist a little mischief. The seals may bump into fins, nibble on wetsuits, or even nudge a student’s mask with their curious noses. These moments spark awe, laughter and a deep sense of connection.
According to Wediko staff, this dive is far more than a field trip. It is a powerful therapeutic experience. Students must stay calm, follow instructions and manage their emotions in an unfamiliar and sometimes intimidating environment. And they do. For many, it becomes a turning point. As one staff member shared, “If they can face the open ocean and wild animals with poise and purpose, they can face anything life throws at them.”

After surfacing, students often describe feeling stronger, more confident and more in control. They carry that sense of accomplishment with them into the classroom, therapy, and their future.
This is a testament to what can happen when young people are given the chance to push boundaries and experience something extraordinary. It is proof that healing, confidence and growth can happen anywhere, even in the cold waters off the coast of New England with a curious seal swimming beside you.
