Running Boston for The Home: Meet Chris Scott

His passion for pushing the limits and staying active fuels his favorite hobbies, enriches his relationships with like-minded friends, and has led him to take on a variety of long-distance running events in the past. With multiple 200-mile relays and a marathon already under his belt, Chris is now setting his sights on the finish line of the 129th Boston Marathon®, presented by Bank of America, to highlight the critical work of The Home.

While this is Chris’ first time representing the organization as a running team member, the Dorchester resident and former competitive golfer has generously fundraised for The Home’s programs for many years. Every December, Chris organizes a festive pub crawl for his community to come together and celebrate the season, all while wearing a fun onesie of their choice. Over the past eight years, the crawl, originally meant to be a tradition for Chris’ small friend group, evolved into a much larger operation. As the crawl grew in size, so did Chris’ goals for it.

“Once the event started to get bigger, I needed to add a charity aspect,” says Chris. “That way, we could raise money with this while we were being silly.”

When the time came to choose an organization that would benefit from the crawl, Chris knew he wanted to back a nonprofit that supported LGBTQ+ youth. A close friend suggested The Home’s Waltham House residential program and he

was quickly sold. “I realized Waltham House was absolutely perfect,” says Chris. “We’re all out here acting like children, being silly in our onesies, and now we’re fundraising for children.”

As of last year, the crawl has expanded to accommodate over 80 people, some who have used The Home’s services themselves.

With April right around the corner, Chris has been seeking advice for race day from friends, work colleagues and gym connections who have conquered Boston’s iconic running route. The most frequently shared piece of advice? Just have fun.

“I’m competitive, so I’m going to work really hard but my goal is to enjoy it,” says Chris. “This is a once in a lifetime experience and I’m going to make the most of it.”
